Therapy for Children and Youth: Supporting Emotional Growth

At Growth & Wellness Therapy Services, we understand the unique challenges children and adolescents face in today’s world. Our therapy provides a safe, supportive environment where young individuals can develop emotional resilience, learn coping strategies, and thrive.

Why Children and Teens Benefit from Therapy

Children and teens experience a wide range of emotions as they grow, and sometimes they may struggle to navigate the complexities of their lives. Therapy helps them understand and express their feelings, address behavioral or emotional challenges, and build skills to succeed.

Common reasons families seek therapy include:

  • Struggles with anxiety, depression, or stress.
  • Difficulty coping with changes, such as divorce, displacement, or loss.
  • Behavioral issues, including defiance, withdrawal, or aggression.
  • Social challenges, including peer pressure or bullying.

Our goal is to help young individuals manage these challenges while empowering them to grow emotionally and socially.

How We Approach Therapy for Children and Adolescents

Our therapists use tailored, age-appropriate techniques to create a comfortable and engaging experience for every child. Depending on their age and needs, we may incorporate:

  • Play Therapy: For younger children, play is a natural way to communicate and learn. Using toys, games, and creative activities, we help children explore their emotions in a way that feels safe and fun.
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): Older children and teens benefit from CBT’s structured approach, which helps identify and reframe negative thought patterns to promote healthier emotional responses.
  • Family Collaboration: Parents and caregivers are essential partners in the therapy process. We work together to provide tools and strategies that reinforce progress at home.

The Role of Parents and Caregivers

Parents and caregivers play a key role in supporting their child’s growth. Through family involvement, we help:

    • Educate you on emotional and developmental milestones.
    • Share strategies to address challenges and improve communication.
    • Create a supportive environment where your child can flourish.

Your involvement ensures that the progress made in therapy extends into your child’s everyday life.

    Children & Youth Therapy FAQ’s

How do you work with children and teens?

When engaging in individual therapy with children and adolescents, I will take a person-centered approach which involves understanding the youth interests and preferences, to help understand their needs.

An example of this is the use of play therapy, which involves various toys, games, children’s books, music interests, sports interests or entertainment interests as well as therapeutic skills books to help encourage children and youth to learn new skills.

These new skills are techniques for them to understand how to self soothe, how to relate and think about the world in the context of their strengths, experiences and struggles, and how to understand their own physical and emotional feelings.

How do you incorporate parents into treatment?

There is an emphasis in providing a child/youth’s parents with education about how to process emotions, and how to help children achieve their developmental milestones.

If necessary, I meet with parents regularly to provide them with skills as to how to support a child’s change or to help them understand some the current needs of their life.

For older children, I will use a more modified treatment curriculum used for adults such as Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy and Solution Focused Therapy.
